How to Poop on the River

Planning a multi-day rafting trip on the Rogue River? You’re probably picturing whitewater thrills, campfire meals, and stargazing nights. But there’s one essential part of river life that first-timers are often curious about: how do you go to the bathroom on the river?

That’s where the groover comes in. Don’t worry, it’s easier (and less intimidating) than you think!

What Is a Groover?

A groover is the river community’s term for a portable toilet system used on multi-day rafting trips. Think of it as a scenic outdoor restroom, provided and maintained by your guides.

  • Clean, comfortable, and private

  • Similar to a household toilet (without the flush)

  • Set up in beautiful riverside spots

Why Is It Called a Groover?

The name goes back to the 1970s, when rafters used ammo cans as toilets. Without a toilet seat, the edges left “grooves” on the sitter’s backside—hence the nickname groover.

Today’s versions are much more comfortable and even come with toilet seats. But the name stuck!

How Does the Groover Work?

Using the groover is simple:

  1. Find the location & grab the key (a paddle placed on the trail to show it’s available).

  2. Do your business. Toilet paper goes into the groover.

  3. Sprinkle Poopari/detergent. This helps break things down and control odor.

  4. Return the key. This signals to others that it’s available.

  5. Wash your hands. A handwashing station with soap and sanitizer will be nearby.

It’s that easy—no stress required.

What Is the Key?

The “key” is a simple system to show whether the groover is in use. Usually, it’s a paddle or other marker:

  • Key visible: Groover is available.

  • Key gone: Someone is inside—please wait.

This ensures privacy and avoids awkward encounters.

Important Rules for the Groover

  • No peeing in the groover. Always pee in the river instead.

  • Some trips include a pee bucket. If you use it, “flush” it by emptying into the river afterward.

  • Wash your hands. Always use the handwashing station before returning to camp.

Your guides will set everything up and keep things clean—it’s part of the service on multi-day camping trips.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Everyone uses the groover—it’s a Leave No Trace requirement on the river.

  • Guides handle setup, cleaning, and packing it out.

  • It’s a shared system, so follow the rules to keep it sanitary and stress-free.

  • The views from the groover are often some of the best of the trip!

The groover might sound intimidating, but once you’ve tried it, you’ll see it’s just part of the river lifestyle. Most rafters end up laughing about it—and even rating their favorite “groover views.”
